It's been a long time, since I've posted anything new here. The last couple weeks were quite busy. New job and a couple other things... Anyway, the winter is epic this year, lots of fresh pow - here's a little clip of my cousin Benni trying to take flight like superman.

- Norway 2011 -

Last week we returned from our three week trip to Norway. It is just an amazing country. The landscapes are stunning, great free camping thanks to the "Allemansrecht", lots of creeks and friendly people. This has been my first time in Norway and I had been looking forward to it for a long time. People had told me about the bad weather and mosquitoes - which proved to be wrong... The weather was variable but better than expected and the mosquitoes.... well, they sucked... literally.

Reiner couldn't come with us for the first of the three weeks because he had to work. He followed us later by plane and train. Hannah, Ali and I decided to go mountain-biking near Hemsedal - a well known skiing and mountain-biking location. When we got there the weather didn't look that good. After a little hike we chose to continue going west - where the weather was better.

After we spend some time northwest of Voss we decided to visit the Hardangerfjord and the famous Voringsfoss - a 180m high waterfall that drops into a 300m deep gorge.

Back in Voss I managed to drive the car into the mud. Thankfully there were some really friendly Norwegian workers with a tractor just 200 Meters away. They pulled the car back out for some beer... Thanks!!

After Reiner had arrived the paddling began. We ran the Urdlandselvi at low water and the playrun section of the Raundalselvi with a good waterlevel. Unfortunately there are no pictures because the weather didn't look good at first and I didn't take my camera with me. Next we did a little park and huck at the moneydrop.

Unfortunately I suffered a bruised a rip and a torn muscle fiber during running the Brandsetelvi. So for the rest of the vacation I couldn't go creeking anymore. Anyways, one more reason to come back to Norway next year!

After a quick visit at the local doctors office to get some painkillers we drove up north to meet up with Alex Keller and Suzanne Spölminck.

After three weeks of fine white water, fine people and amazing landscapes we had to go home. Although the trip didn't go as planned for me personally, I still enjoyed it. Three weeks after hurting myself I can actually laugh again without having pain. ;) One thing that I can say is: I will be back!

I'm happy to announce that today I finished my studies in architecture in Graz - Austria. Here's a little overview of my final project - a multi propose arena in Graz.

This Friday I'm off to Norway for three weeks. I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time!

- Piemont 2011 -

After driving nine hours to Ivrea, Italy on Friday, we unexpectedly found the local rivers flooded. It had rained heavily for the last 48 hours. Because of that we had to change plans. All the classic sections were too high to run. Instead we went "river-wanking" - a styrian term for driving up valleys and looking into unknown creeks. ( At least unknown to us...)

After meeting up with the rest of the group (Reiner picked up our new Riot kayaks two days earlier) we drove a little south. We found a juicy but runnable stretch on the upper Germanasca southwest of Turino after deciding that the Chiusella was way to high. I didn't make any pictures since it was still raining and we didn't stop a lot after scouting the whole stretch before running it.

"Riverwanking" has to be planned - The group is searching for possible drainages to run

Afterwards we drove up to the Soana river to spend a rainy night up in the valley. The next day the Soana was extremely high with an estimated flow of over 100m³ at the put in. - "Riverwanking" again!!

Finally we decided to take a look at the Orco river which is damed and normally doesn't go. This might have been the best decision of the trip. The Orco offers a 10km long section class 4-5, but only when all the other rivers are very high.

After 3 days of steady thunderstorms every couple hours the rain finally took a break allowing the swollen creeks to fall to reasonable levels. That way we could quickly run the Chiusella before driving back home on Tuesday.

Hey! Last Friday we came back home from Corsica where we spend 10 days. Like always Corsica didn't disappoint. I love the landscape, the food, the people and of course the kayaking. Due to the lack of snow, could temperatures at night and no rain the water levels were rally low, but fortunately some creeks were still runnable. Thanks to Alex, Sanne, Pascal and Arnd for letting me join them on the rivers!

I only took my still camera with me on the Rizzanese, because i focused on filming with my gopro this year. There will be a videoclip soon.

Looks like a lot of snow, but it's not

This was the last year for running th Rizzanese, because of the dam, thats almost finished... Loosing this creek makes me really sad and angry at the same time. At least I was able to run the middle section one more time. And I had my personal first and unfortunately last decent of the Peschelschreck aka bridge drop. Standing at the lip for the 5th time in 3 years it was the first time with a good feeling about runnning it in my stomach. The feeling after stomping the line was even better and made me kinda high!

Corte

After visiting Corte we had two days of rain, not enough rain to make the rivers go up - We spend some time relaxing and decided to drive south to Bonifacio.

It's April and as every year it's the time to head to the Ile de Beauté. We will leave this Saturday for two weeks of creeking, biking and enjoying delicious food. - After three months of continuous working on my thesis this is a rescuing break from work. It's also the first trip with our new car... Can't wait for it!

Yesterday we had our first video session with the cablecam out in the woods. The rig works alright, but isn't perfect yet. Since we don't have a wireless video transmitter, I can't actually see what I'm filming. Getting a good shot is hard and only possible with luck. Right now we are using a hdhero for filming.

I also crashed the cam into the tree twice - I've got to get used to the controls before we put a real video camera up there... ;)

However, I'm looking forward to shoot kayaking with this set-up!

Saturday was a ugly day in Graz. It was extremely foggy and wet weather. After Hannah had finished at work we decided take a look, if we could catch some sun on the Schöckl - a nearby mountain.

The late afternoon light combined with the fog made for awesome colors...

Came to the top of the hike - 50 meters below the point where I took this picture there was absolutely no sight of the sun. And it was about 10°C colder...

- One week of biking, hiking and kayaking in Osttirol -

Hey,
I just came home after spending a week in Osttirol. This might be the most beautiful part of Austria... But that's just my opinion. Although Osttirol isn't really big it offers many rivers to kayak, has huge mountains and the possibilities for mountain-bike rides is almost unlimited.

We first drove up the Deffereggen creek to start the vacation with a bike tour to the very end of this amazing valley.

After that I had to take a look at the waterfalls of the upper Deffereggen Creek aka Schwarzbach. Since there had been a thunderstorm the night before it was to high. There weren't any other kayakers I could have joined anyway... I decided to to a solo run of the lower Isel instead - This is a fun big water run, that starts with big waves and holes and mellows out to the end.

The next day we hiked up the upper Isel to visit the Umball - waterfalls. The first picture shows a little waterfall on a tributary creek. This was the second time I visited the falls, but the first time we hiked up to the upper Falls, shown in the second picture.

In the afternoon I called up Stefan Kinner, who lives to Osttirol. We decided to run the Waterfalls of the Deffereggen - creek in the evening. By the way, this is my turn on stand up paddling.

The flows were still high. We both decided to chicken out on the first drop and portaged the entry. But everything else was good to go.

The next day we did another bike tour near the Großglockner. This is the Seebach - valley. They wanted to dam this amazing place 30 years ago. Luckily that didn't happen.

- Piemont, Aosta -

Last week I spend five awesome days kayaking in the area around Ivrea with my brother Reiner. On the first day we ran the upper Chiusella - This is a beautiful California - like bedrock river. However, we had a really low water level... I imagine it would be even more beautiful with more water. Next week they have a race at this creek - hopefully with more water. Racing a low creek - sounds like hell....

After we had finished the run, we decided to drive up to Hone to take a look at the famous waterfalls of the lower Ayasse. Unfortunately the Ayasse had about three times the suggested flow. It looked runnable but also extremely pushy. We decided to take a look at the upper Ayasse instead, which we didn't have much info about.

We found a section that was very cool - Grade 4-5 with one portage.

The next day we ran the Soana river. This is a nice long boulder run through a deep gorge. We didn't take any pictures since most of the run consists of bigger boulder rapids we wanted to run together. Taking pictures on such a run with only two people on the river is difficult.

Next up was the Stura di Ala - Famous for it's 15 meter high waterfall in a tight gorge. We couldn't run it, since we didn't have our climbing gear with us and to run it, you have to belay down into the gorge after another unrunnable 12-15 meter drop above the waterfall.
Ok, thats a lie - At least I wouldn't even consider running this drop even if was not walled in. ;)

Anyway, here are some pictures from the upper and lower Stura di Ala. (The lower part is a less known short but very hard gorge - We portaged most of the main drops)

To finish up our short kayaking trip we drove back to Osttirol to run the waterfall section of the Defereggenbach - But this creek also had to much water, so we only did a easier section below the waterfalls.... here are some Pictures from the way back home... (The Dolomiten - Mountains)

- Graz freestyle competition -

Yesterday there was the annual Graz "Rodeo". This is the only freestyle competition I participate every year. I usually don't do much freestyle kayaking, but it's in my home town and I can't miss this one. Anyway, not that I had higher expectations - I dropped out after prelims and took the 15th place... Not bad but also no good at all. ;)

I had to leave before the competition was finished but I think Peter Csonka won it. He was absoltly ripping the wave!! I'll post the results soon.

Like last year there was a "Pappbootrennen". People could build there own boats from cardboard and run down 200 meters of the river. This event is really fun to watch.

After that the competition continued with the finals.

- Back from Corsica -

Last weekend we came home after spending 10 days at the island of beauty, and as always it's been a great time! Although the water levels of the rivers were extremely low most of the rivers were still runnable. We also did some nice mountain bike runs and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

I didn't take my camera with me on the first river I ran. The weather wasn't that good. Actually I don't have any pictures of the first river and the first two mountain bike tours....
Anyway, I was glad to meet Alex Keller and some other people I knew at the kayak session festival at the Tavignano. Now I had a group of paddlers I could join to do some runs.

We decided to run the Codi and the upper and middle Rizzanese in the next two days. This was really important because next year those rivers may be gone due to the dam that is build near the confluence of the two rivers. The levels were very low, but it was fun anyway. Sadly the weather was bad on the second day. So there are hardly any pictures of the Rizzanese.

We decided to visit Bonifacio - a nice little town standing at the edge of sandstone - cliffs.

After that we headed up north again doing some Mountain biking, but no kayaking. The water - levels were too low at the creeks in the northwest of the island.

The last river of the Trip was the upper Golo at extremely low water.

Hey,

Yesterday I got some great news... I finally got my "Pickerl" for my car after I had to replace some parts of it. So I won't be without a vehicle until may 2011!!! - Except it dies on me until then.
Anyway, we are going to Corsica yet again on Tuesday for 10 days. I'm really looking forward to this trip because it's the first time for Hannah to visit this beautiful island to do some kayaking and biking.
I'm going to upload photos as soon as I get back in about 2 weeks from now.

- Les Trois Vallees -

A couple days ago I came home from a exiting week of skiing in the French alps. We had some bad weather - which was a good thing because after we had sat out some snowstorms we could enjoy the nice powder. I've been visiting this resort frequently over the last 15 years or so - I hadn't been lucky with the snow in recent years, but the last week was awesome.

This was kind of funny because we had taken Hannah's father's newer Toyota because we thought my 20 year old VW passat might break down on a 1400 km journey… We spend the night in a small town near Torino and had some good food and wine. The next day we could continue our drive home after toyota took a quick look at the car...

- Powder at Tauplitz -

The last two days me and my girlfriend Hannah had the chance to drive up to my favorite ski area in upper Styria - the Tauplitz. This is a small resort, which is nice because it's not as expensive as the bigger ones, but still offers a quite big back-country skiing area.
The first day was great. The weather was bad (windy, cold and snowy) but we love that kind of weather. No people means no powder you have to share. ;) The snow was deep and light - just like everybody loves it.

On the second day the weather was much "better". It was sunny and warm - a bad thing for the snow. This time it was wet and heavy. The conditions were quite dangerous because of the fresh snow that had fallen with lots of wind. (Avalanche grade 4) Some people still didn't respect that. We saw three avalanches going off in the first 2 hours of skiing... Luckily nobody was buried.
This day the group was bigger because my mum, my brother, my cousin and some friends came up for a day of powder. Due to respect of the dangerous conditions we decided to stay off the steep slopes and found some smaller and not as steep ones. We also found a nice kicker some people had build a couple days before. Usually I'm not a fan of "big" jumps, but this one landed in soft powder.

- university work - hyperactive high rise-

it's been a while since i have posted anything... I just had way to many things to finish for university. But yesterday I could finish of my biggest project of this semester. It was about designing a high-rise building in vienna that uses different design ideas to produce it's needed energy. The goal was a positive energy building, that produces more energy than it needs. Basically a power plant ;) . Additional tasks where usage neutrality, smart usage of different energy resources and the improvement of the existing urban landscape. That's way to many tasks for one semester, so people struggled to finish there projects. I almost wasn't able to finish it either because of my bad time management. ;)

I'm not going to get into details about my project, but this is my main design concept.
Since there is quite a lot of wind in vienna I wanted to work with that to power the ventilation of the building and to produce electricity. The high rise is designed to do those things at all three different main wind directions on site. It's a lightweight steel construction (which has more embodied energy than concrete but can be recycled and reused). I added thermal mass with activated water tanks in the ceilings.

band recordings

hi,
during the holidays my band decided it was time to record some of the newer stuff... We just want to know how they sound like, so we don't need professional recordings. We didn't go to a studio - we recorded in our rehearsal room.

The mix isn't finished yet, but I took some pictures.... This was the second time i used my new wide-angle lens. It is a lot of fun, but makes faces look stupid. ;)

Hi,

After following several blogs for some time I decided it's time to start my own. The purpose of this blog is to release pictures, videos and other stuff that might be interesting. I think it's sad, if this material gets lost somewhere on the computer. Because of that I'll try to put some of it up here.

There is different stuff I'm thinking of uploading...

In 2008 I discovered my interests in photography and bought myself a used DSLR camera. Photographs will be the major part of this blog. I'm not going to write long stories, I'll just show pictures.

In 2003 my brother Reiner started making kayaking films. I'll put those up here too, if he's alright with that... ;)

Other than that I might load up some of my university-projects, some of the music my band makes or anything else that seems worth it.

To start this blog off I'll put up some older videos and pictures. Later on I'll try to keep this blog as updated as possible. ;)
